In the crowded luxury midsize SUV segment, the Buick Enclave stands out for its refined ride and numerous standard safety features. The second-generation Enclave was introduced in 2018. While the 2020 version of the luxury SUV doesn't see any major changes, it does offer some improvements over the previous models. One improvement is the now available Sport Touring package in the Essence trim, which adds some restyled exterior components and bigger alloy wheels. While the Enclave doesn't necessarily lag behind in any one area, some critics argue that the SUV is generally overshadowed by faster, more luxurious and better-equipped competitors.
What makes the Buick Enclave so Good?
When you're looking for a family hauler or simply an SUV with plenty of room for passengers and cargo, you'll appreciate the Buick Enclave's spacious interior with three rows and comfortable seating for up to seven. If you're into numbers, the Enclave has a total length of 204.30 inches and a maximum cargo volume of 97.6 cubic feet. The second-row pitches and slides by pulling a handle to provide better access to the third row.

Certain features will make rides more enjoyable. For example, when the Enclave is remotely started, the heated and ventilated seats are automatically activated. The settings automatically adjust based on the temperature sensors and your preferred settings. An in-vehicle air ionizer, available in most trims, purifies the air inside the SUV.
The base Preferred model features a 310-horsepower V6 engine, remote start, an eight-inch diagonal color touchscreen, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities, heated driver and passenger seats, and a total of six USB ports. Upgrade to the Essence for leather seating in the first and second rows along with lane change alert, rear cross-traffic alert and Sirius XM radio. The next available Premium has a Bose Premium 10-speaker audio system, power-folding third-row seats, ventilated and massaging front seats and forward collision alert. The premium Avenir comes with an HD camera and a rear camera mirror, power moonroof with a fixed rear skylight and wireless smartphone charging.
Which Suvs Are the Main Competitors to the Buick Enclave?
One of the main competitors to the Enclave is the Audi Q7. Both SUVs have three rows with seating for up to seven passengers. However, the Q7 has a larger standard 12.3-inch virtual cockpit along with leather seating surfaces, even on the base model. While the Enclave has a 60/40 split-folding third row, the Q7's is 50/50. The base Q7 has a lower-output 248-horsepower engine.

Another competitor is the 2020 Mazda CX-9. The CX-9 comes with high-end cabin material, an array of standard features and modern styling. The CX-9 is a family-oriented vehicle with seating for seven. The base model comes with a 250-horsepower engine and available all-wheel-drive for inclement conditions. Heated front seats, a seven-inch full-color touchscreen display and a three-zone automatic climate control round out the list of available features on the CX-9.
The 2020 Lexus RX 350 is another alternative. This luxury midsize SUV is available in two-row and three-row models, although both have cramped cargo holds. The 2020 model features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphones. Both smartphone connectivity systems are also found in the 2020 Buick Enclave. In comparison, the three-row RX 350L has 58.5 cubic feet of cargo space, while the Enclave has a maximum cargo capacity of 97.6 cubic feet.
What Are the Pros and Cons of Owning a Buick Enclave?
When it comes to fuel economy, the Enclave is about average for a midsize SUV. You can expect an EPA-estimated 18 miles per gallon around town and up to 26 MPG on the highway. Unlike some other vehicles, which can see a drastic reduction in fuel economy with all-wheel-drive, the numbers only drop by one mile per gallon for both city and highway driving.

In terms of reliability, the 2020 Enclave receives an above-average J.D. Power predicted reliability rating of 3.5 out of five. The basic warranty is valid for three years or 36,000 miles, while the powertrain is covered up to 60,000 miles or five years.
One of the biggest complaints of the 2020 Buick Enclave is that it doesn't share the same sporty driving dynamics as some of its competitors, especially the Audi Q7 and even the 2020 Mazda CX-9. The Mazda also has a more affordable price tag yet comes with a similar suite of available features. You could even save money by going with the lower-end Chevrolet Traverse, which has the same amount of cargo and passenger space.
