Whether you're a seasoned flier or someone who flies just occasionally, you can leverage air miles rewards programs to get the most out of your travel budget and earn free flights. All the major U.S. airlines have travel rewards or loyalty programs, which may also be called travel points or frequent flier programs. The name of the program varies depending on the airline. For instance, Delta has its SkyMiles program, Jet Blue its TrueBlue program and Southwest its Rapid Reward programs. You may want to sign up for one or more depending on how well they match your needs, including where they fly, how many flights are available and what it takes to earn a free flight.

Choose the Best Air Miles Rewards Program

Here are some pointers on navigating various air miles rewards programs. Each airline has its own set of guidelines, but essentially, you build up a predetermined number of miles according to how far you fly or how much you spend on an airline credit card. You then have the option of using those miles, or points, to buy tickets

You can participate in any of the programs at the level that's right for you. You may decide to sign up, let the miles build up, and check your account balance occasionally. Or, you may decide to get as much leverage as possible out of your air time.

Top Air Miles Reward Programs

You need to make multiple flights to qualify for air miles reward flights. For example, you must fly 20,000 miles on Frontier Airlines to be eligible for a free round-trip ticket. Again, each airline has its own guidelines, but it's fair to say that you usually need several flights to earn a free one. As with any other loyalty program, the points will eventually build up and you can cash them in. In most cases, the points you've earned from flying will not expire.

While you need to evaluate each plan according to how you intend to use it, a study by U.S. News and World Report ranks these programs as the top five: Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, Delta SkyMiles, JetBlue TrueBlue, Southwest Rapid Rewards, United MileagePlus.

Airline Credit Card Programs

In addition to enrolling in an airline's frequent flier program and taking actual flights, you can earn air miles rewards points by signing up for a credit card that offers mileage points. Some credit cards offer miles for any airline, while others are specific to one or several airlines.

Most credit card programs give you a predetermined number of points for each dollar you spend, which you can then redeem for a ticket, provided flights and pre-designated rewards seats are available. Each card determines how many points are required for a ticket or other travel-related benefit, such as free checked bags or priority boarding.

Attend to Card Requirements

If you use a credit card frequently, these programs are fairly easy ways to accumulate points. You are also subject to all the other credit card requirements, such as paying an annual fee. Typically, a good credit score is required to qualify for a card. Many cards offer "signing bonuses" of thousands of miles. Southwest Airlines, for instance, offers 50,000 bonus points after you spend $2,000 once you open a Chase Visa Rapid Rewards Plus account.

Stay Grounded and Earn Miles

It is also possible to earn air miles rewards points by staying on the ground, with miles programs that are affiliated with dining out at designated restaurants or shopping at various retailers such as Barnes and Noble or Target.

Remember to read the fine print about air rewards miles and flight guidelines. You may discover important nuggets of information, such as Delta's requirement that stopovers in the U.S. of more than four hours require additional miles, or Alaska Airline's requirement that award flights must begin and end in the U.S., with a required portion on Alaska Airlines. Check back often with the loyalty program you've selected, as airlines overhaul their programs regularly.
